KAPA FM: KSWCD 60-Second Sustainability PSA

Radio recording at KAPA FM

Purpose

I joined KSWCD leaders and fellow students on KAPA FM in Kailua-Kona for a one-minute PSA sharing the district’s mission—prevent soil erosion, conserve water resources, and prevent floods—and pointing listeners to practical, local actions. In under a minute, we connected those goals to Kona’s real resource issues: coastal management, flooding and erosion, community conservation awareness, recycling and waste reduction, watershed planning, and efficient water use.

We opened with the KSWCD mission in plain language—protect our soil, save water, and reduce flood risk—then linked it to everyday choices in Kona’s climate. Quick tips included keeping soil covered to cut erosion and runoff; watering smart (drip or morning/evening) to stretch supplies; and using native or drought-tolerant plants to stabilize slopes and help coastal areas. We noted how small upstream actions reduce sediment flowing makai (toward the ocean), supporting coastal resource management and healthier nearshore waters.

Our Hope

Next, we highlighted community actions: start a compost bin to reduce waste, join a cleanup and consider a rain barrel or small catchment where appropriate. For watershed planning and flood prevention, we urged listeners to keep drainage paths clear and plant strips or windbreaks where bare soil meets hard surfaces. We closed by inviting folks to connect with the Kona Soil & Water Conservation District for education, to share it with a neighbor, and help build Kona’s resilience together.
